Steel Building Installation – Do it Yourself

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Did you play with an Erector Set when you were a boy?  Remember all of the pieces of punched metal and the little screws and nuts? How about those “tinny” little wrenches and that screwdriver?  Wasn’t it a great feeling when you actually assembled something that resembled the picture?  I do, mine was a robot among other things.

Men today can find that same great sense of accomplishment as the boys of yesteryear when they install their own steel building.  The general idea is the same although the steel building installation may actually be easier than playing with the Erector Set.  The key to a no-hassle, do-it-yourself steel building installation is to find a company that designs steel building kits for the do-it-yourselfer

To help you understand the installation many steel structure manufacturers offer a steel building installation DVD that will guide you thru the installation process step by step.  Reputable companies will also include a detailed set of installation instructions that is personalized to your steel building kit when you purchase the structure.  Most companies will mail or email you do-it-yourself instructions to review before you make a purchase.

Some things to look for in the installation instruction packet:

A steel building company that has its customer’s best interest in mind will include the concrete footing and floor specifications in the instructional information.  This is a very big help to you as a customer and will save you valuable time if you are receiving bids from concrete contractors or doing the work yourself.

As a side note:   Bear in mind many entities will require a building permit before you start construction. To acquire the building permit you will need to submit a set of drawings and structural calculations that are wet sealed by a certified engineer.  The drawings will need to include the concrete foundation and floor design. Many metal building companies do not include the foundation and floor in their engineering packet.  Steer clear of this type of company; it will cost you a lot of money to get the foundation and floor engineering from a third party engineer.

An important thing to look for in the instructional packet is a list of the tools that you are going to need to complete the project.  The list of tools will save you time and not to mention money because instead of rushing out to buy tools on installation day you can acquire the tools over a period of time until you are ready to start the project.

Take time to study the installation instructions so you can call or email the steel building manufacturer and ask questions.  Now is the time to quiz the sales consultants so you have the answers to all of your questions and concerns.  A good sales consultant should be able to give you all the information that you need, if not, ask to speak to someone else or look for another company. As I said earlier you want a steel building that is designed for do-it-yourself installation.

Steel Building Plans

So you have been dreaming about a steel building,  a storage building,  an RV garage, a hobby shop or maybe just a steel garage to keep your belongings out of the weather and give you room to enjoy your hobbies.

Come back down to earth and I’ll try to help you turn your dreams into reality.

First let’s take a look at your needs.  What are you going to store in the steel structure?

Do you plan to store a Recreational Vehicle?

If you plan to store an RV, you will need to know the clearance height of your RV.  My experience shows that you will need at least 13’-6” of clearance for a Class A motor coach.

Many of you may not own a Class A motor coach and the RV that you currently own is only 12’ tall. Look a few years down the road, you never know you may trade up to a Class A coach one day.  This is something to consider and another reason to research steel building plans.

Modern Metal Storage Buildings

Friday, February 13th, 2009
Today’s modern metal storage buildings are no longer dilapidated backyard shacks. With construction innovation, your new storage structure can be as sophisticated as your home or business. Store tools, equipment, or documents. A metal building can keep cars, boats, or airplanes safe from the elements. Keep your belongings secure by storing on your own property and not in an expensive self-storage unit.

Metal buildings are usually made of steel and built in arch frame or rigid-frame style. Steel is a combination of iron and carbon. Carbon is added in varying amounts for strength. Steel is a practical building material because it is durable in all types of weather but still lightweight. It is an ideal material for storage buildings because it is also fire-resistant. (more…)

You finally decided that you need a new building. Maybe you need a new office building as your business expands. Or maybe you really have to have that indoor riding arena for your horses. Or your company needs to expand with a new manufacturing facility. Maybe you just want a nice outbuilding or barn for storage and other projects.

You’ve heard that steel buildings are a great option. You’ve heard that steel building construction can save you time and money, that metal buildings go up fast, and since they are pre-engineered, there are no surprises. They come in on budget, and are expertly engineered to meet the local building codes so the building permitting process is easy. And you can make all the design decisions yourself.
